CPD Denies New Orleans' Bid for Presidential Debate 2008
The Commission on Presidential Debates today rejected New Orleans as a site for a 2008 presidential debate, citing as its reason that the city was not yet recovered enough from Hurricane Katrina - or technologically sophisticated enough - to handle such an important event.
In response, Anne Milling, Women of the Storm founder, said “New Orleans is the clear moral choice for a 2008 presidential debate. Unfortunately, it appears that politics has trumped in the site selection process carried out by the Commission on Presidential Debates. According to Commission Board co-chair Paul Kirk, the city was rejected because it was not ready to host such an event. That is clearly untrue. New Orleans met or exceeded every criterion that the Commission set forth in its application process - in logistics, finance and educational partners.” To read Milling’s full statement, click here.
We are grateful for editorial support from The Times-Picayune, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Washington Times, the Boston Globe, and TIME Magazine, as well as seven Presidential candidates and thousands of everyday Americans who have expressed their strong desire to see a New Orleans debate. Thanks to all of you.
