WOS Web Site Honored

The Women of the Storm Web site has been named one the top five non-profit Web sites in the nation by PR News, as part of the Non-Profit PR Awards.

The Non-Profit PR Awards are designed to salute excellence in communications among nonprofit organizations worldwide. Judges considered quality of design, communications and navigation, as well as the Web site's effectiveness in building membership, raising issue awareness and incorporating PR strategies into the site's success.

Other Web sites honored in December ceremonies include the Nevada Cancer Institute, which won the top award;  the United Nations Foundation; The Starlight Starbright Children's Fund; and the United Negro College Fund's "An Evening of Stars Tribute to Aretha Franklin."

To spread information about the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Women of the Storm called on Congress and other national leaders to visit the areas affected by the natural disasters. To improve their ability to educate legislators about needs and gain recovery funds, the team turned to a Web platform and published a list of those politicians who have visited. The site also encouraged visitors to contact those legislators who had not seen the situation first-hand.

Making the public aware of those who turned a blind eye to the problem put pressure on the government, and it brought much-needed attention to the cause.
